Justin Williams’ top four

  1. Georgia
  2. TCU
  3. Ohio State
  4. Michigan

Why these four?

Georgia isn’t unbeatable, yet it is untouchable for that top spot for the time being. But give me TCU and its top-rated strength-of-record in the No. 2 spot after a comeback win over Baylor and another pair of lackluster victories by Ohio State and Michigan.

David Ubben’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. Michigan
  3. Ohio State
  4. TCU

Why these four?

Tennessee’s loss clarifies the race a bit, and there won’t be much drama in the top four, but if the committee has to debate two-loss SEC champion LSU vs. the loser of The Game, it’s not going to make any friends.

Matt Fortuna’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan
  4. TCU

Why these four?

Ohio State moves past Michigan for me this week after what was clearly a lookahead weekend for both teams. I thought long and hard about moving TCU up one or two spots, but ultimately couldn’t quite get there with the Horned Frogs, despite how much they continue to impress. Is this one of those seasons with just one dominant team and a bunch of really good ones playing for second? Georgia is sure making its case for just that.

Scott Dochterman’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan
  4. TCU

Why these four?

What really matters this week is who is No. 5? Will it be USC, LSU or Clemson? That spot will have major CFP implications for who rises into the Playoff when the final pairings are released.

Mitch Sherman’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan
  4. TCU

Why these four?

USC is lurking. So it is a controversial selection day as the Ohio State-Michigan loser figures to make a solid argument for inclusion. The calm before the storm was not so calm in Week 12, as each team in the top four struggled in wins. No changes here, but the table is set for a furious finish.

Sam Khan’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. TCU
  3. Ohio State
  4. Michigan

Why these four?

The top four teams remain the same, but TCU has a case to be No. 2. The Horned Frogs have a better strength of schedule and strength of record than the other three, according to ESPN. They have more wins over bowl-eligible teams (eight) than Georgia (six), Ohio State (six) and Michigan (five).

Andy Bitter’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan
  4. TCU

Why these four?

Survive and advance was the theme last week, which teams just outside this top group didn’t do. Georgia’s in a class by itself. Ohio State was the only one in the last three that didn’t need a last-second field goal to hang on, so I moved the Buckeyes back ahead of the Wolverines. That head-to-head will be sorted out next week anyway.

Jeff Schultz’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan
  4. TCU

Why these four?

All four struggled against opponents with three or four losses, and if this was a tightly bunched top 10 and any of the teams below the top four had a strong case for moving up, this is the week I would do it. But who are you moving into the Playoff field? Two-loss LSU or Alabama? USC, which has had a relatively soft schedule and barely escaped UCLA with a win? Clemson, which barely beat Syracuse and was blown out at Notre Dame? No thank you. The Playoff field remains the same.

Grace Raynor’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. TCU
  4. Michigan

Why these four?

It wasn’t a particularly pretty week for the top four teams, but all four remained undefeated and that’s what matters this time of year. TCU leapfrogs Michigan for me this week, however, given that the Horned Frogs won on the road in dramatic fashion against Baylor. (How about that ending?!) I wanted to see Michigan slam the door on an Illinois team the Wolverines should have beaten by more than two points.

Cameron Teague Robinson’s top four

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan
  4. TCU

Why these four?

All four teams were tested on Saturday but avoided upsets. I would be shocked if Georgia loses. TCU continues to be the cardiac kids. We’re finally at Ohio State-Michigan week. The winner likely guarantees a spot in the Playoff. With Tennessee’s loss, however, there’s a path for both to make it.

What Clemson, USC and more will learn from the new Top 25

Tennessee’s chances to make the College Football Playoff went up in flames on Saturday night, but there are still seven teams with a legitimate shot to make the four-team field. A few teams might need to stay perfect to get there; others need some outside help in the final two weeks of action. But clarity is coming as we head into the rivalry weekend.

This week’s CFP rankings are the fourth of five in-season rankings, released each Tuesday through the end of November. They provide a window into the thinking of this year’s selection committee, an understanding of what it values and how it sees these top teams. As a reminder, each midweek Top 25 is an incomplete evaluation. But it’s a start, and it can be a signal.

College Football Playoff expansion timeline

The College Football Playoff will expand from a four-team field to a 12-team bracket by 2026, at the latest. But those who run it are trying to expand earlier so that the 12-team tournament could be in place in time for the 2024 regular season. That process has been more complicated than it may seem.

It’s crunch time for the commissioners and presidents who oversee the CFP. To make early expansion a reality, they have to resolve all the major and minor issues in short order — likely before the end of the calendar year, or at least before January. 9 national championship game.

They have figured out how the calendar will work for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, when the games will be played and how to make the complicated logistics of on-campus games work. They have also settled how to distribute revenue fairly among Power 5 schools for those two seasons. But there are a few final boxes to check.
